SHS Sector Network Meeting

After first launching in 2018, the SHS Good Practice Awards return! The awards provide important recognition for the admirable work of the sector and gives an opportunity to showcase and celebrate our successes together.

Key dates:

  • nominations are open from 18 November 2019 – 17 January 2020
  • voting will be open from 1 February – 14 February 2020
  • the Awards will be announced at the Homelessness NSW Conference Dinner on February 27 2020

Survey – Increasing Access to Safe and Sustainable Private Rental Accommodation for Women Escaping Domestic and Family Violence

Funded by the Department of Communities and Justice, the purpose of the Safer Homes project is to increase access to safe and sustainable private rental tenancies for women and children escaping Domestic and Family Violence. The aim is to achieve this through the promotion of mutually beneficial collaboration between support services and real estate agents, supported and enabled by increasing knowledge, fostering attitudinal change and adopting good practice.

We are aware that many services have already formed positive relationships with real estate agents and are working in innovative ways that are resulting in good housing outcomes. We have also heard from you about the many barriers experienced by services when trying to secure housing in the private rental market for women escaping DFV.

The following survey is aimed at getting a much better understanding of your experience working with women who are suitable (i.e. they qualify for Rent Choice Start Safely) for private rental accommodation, to help inform the development of this project.
The survey will around 10 – 15 minutes to complete and will cover 3 main areas;
1. Your experience and your clients experience in accessing the private rental market
2. Your feedback on rental assistance and specifically Rent Choice Start Safely
3. And your opinion about the role of property managers and landlords.
We appreciate how busy everyone is, but what we get out of this project in the end will very much depend on the information and feedback we collect and analyse.  It would be great to include your feedback and reflections gained from your experience.

New Program in 2020 – Enterprise Trainer Skills Set for Aboriginal Staff
This program is for Aboriginal staff and runs over 5 weeks – 1 day per week in Sydney. We can look at live streaming options for rural/regional staff who would like to attend (and can’t travel).
The program is delivered in a culturally competent way and provides a pathway for staff into training and supervision.  Participants will gain 2 units of competency from the Cert IV in Workplace Trainer and Assessor and will learn making presentations and providing work skill instructions.  Participants will complete their assessments during the 5 face to face sessions.
